The starting of a new chapter

I got rid of Blogger, it was having many issues with my firewall, and
I couldn’t be bothered to fix it. So I’ve installed WordPress instead, which is suprisingly good considering it’s written in PHP. There are some bugs with the whole importing process, such as time zone screwups. Like the Feb 18 update is reporting as being posted on Feb 17 ;) Still some templating bugs and stuff to iron out.

I went out today, and I realised that:

  • Unplanned, spare of the moment activities turn out much better than planned ones.
  • Don’t ever ever trust mobile phones, or rely on access to “donated” wireless internet access.

I’ve had a long day, it sucked, yada yada. However yesturday was sorta good, had a mostly unsuccessful wardrive with Laska, Jack and the Black Bitch. Unfortunately travelling faster than walking pace with Kismet inside an old metal car isn’t the ideal conditions far wardriving. And like a fool, I have again got a wireless card without an antenna plug. I’m starting to think this only is availible on PCI WiFi cards (which is pointless for me).

Two days of freedom left before TAFE starts again. And plenty of stuff to do that I don’t really want to do.

Febby 18 Update

Filed under: Coding, Kruel, Life — micolous @ 15:06

A whole lot has happened in the last month. Starting from the begining…

I went to Sko’s pad, in Newcastle, in the middle of Janurary. Must fun was had by all, and some work was done. And now I’m addicted to WoW ;) The new praelium site is half done, there’s still plenty to do, and now with TAFE back, little time to do it.

TAFE’s back. A few new people coming in, and meeting more people. And forgetting all their names ;)

au_xmltvgen_austext is still going through testing. Most of the issues are due to alevtd being unstable. Probably because the version I have is out of the Debian repos and hacked into Ubuntu, things get ugly. It wouldn’t be the first time. I’m finding some more bugs in the code, but they’re minor. And the man page
is still giving me some issues.

I have newer lappy, and 802.11g wifi card to go with it. Ironically it works on Linux but not Windows. And I’ve reinstalled a couple of times… The card is a Netcomm NP5430, and I can report that all you need to do to get it working on Ubuntu is copy the PRISM54G.ARM file from the Drivers folder on the CD into /usr/share/hotplug/firmware, and rename the file to ‘isl3890′. Then ifconfig eth1 up it, and the wifi card is active.

I have a Visual Basic .NET class today (Friday). I’m already dreading it. They had to take a perfectly good system (.NET) and hack it onto Visual Basic, thus completely turning it into a complete hell. Thanks Microsoft. Now I have to put up with Visual Basic, again.

Some of the classes I’m repeating feel much easier, going over a second time. And in the case of one of them, writing web pages to standards is far easier than scripting Excel…

I have a new(er) server. 2.4 GHz Celeron, 0.75gb of ram, 160gb of hdd space. Feels a lot faster than the Cyrix of course. Still in the process of going through and getting the old data onto the new server. Thus the blog is temporarily being hosted offsite.

The Need, for Rice

Got sick of unstable Ubuntu. They really need to create a testing repos, with the latest software, but none of the unstable beta stuff… a nice fine balance. So I am a ricer again. Should tire me over until Gnome 2.10 in out and Ubuntu Hoary is more stable. Don’t want to live in Warty, it’s out of date.

So, over the last 48 hours my desktop computer is being rebuilt.

No TAFE is making me get a bit bored, though I should find something interesting to do real soon. Like learning C++ and use of OGRE. And panicing about how to deal with next semester more effectively than last. I’m really disappointed in my time management during that time, and my dead laptop.

Sitting watching late night TV is depressing… all the phone, SMS and internet dating ads that come
on. Do they honestly think that everyone up late to watch Star Trek is all lonely? Oh wait…

Christmas was the normal. Overcrowded shops, and rushing around. I felt really tired by the end. Then to find how I will get to Sydney in the middle of Janurary to Koderfest.

Yay, the madness ensues.

33 days left

The new year is coming. Yay.

I’ve put in some of the basis for the rmrms site now, then I’ll still have to write some code to handle the website. I’ll also have to setup a box with MySQL on it, just I don’t
have any spare. And this server really doesn’t take too kindly to having MySQL run on it.

I considered writing the site with a SQLite backend, but it still has some of the classic flat-file issues. Though backup of the database will be super easy and the only time database software is running is
when there is a request on the server. I figure if I separate the entries for the site and the ratings into two different files, I might not have as much of the site open to abuse… it’s a balance. Though there’s the whole world readable plaintext copy of the MySQL password I would have anyway… it’s a tossup.

I hate summer. I can’t sleep anymore, because it’s too damn hot. And I need a another laptop, and I’m getting fairly desparate now.
I’ve gotta find one this week or I think I’ll start failing some subjects. It’s the only one (computer) with Office 2000 (and Windows) on it, that is for working on. And I hate having to reboot my main desktop box constantly.
