I decided that I would experiment with a 28-hour day for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately it turned in to a week-and-a-half deal, as I had to fall off the wagon for some other commitments. I thought I’d write up some notes on it in case you decide to experiment with this yourself, because I couldn’t find a lot of literature on the subject (other than people theoretically positing things).

Basically the idea behind a 28-hour day is that instead of following a 24 hour circadian rhythm (16 hours awake, 8 hours sleep), you follow one that is 28 hours long (20 hours long, 8 hours asleep). This is inspired by the xkcd comic (which is always a bad idea to take things on it seriously)…

I made some adjustments to the plan, namely that my day is divided up into 18:40 of waking time, and 9:20 of sleep. This means that I ended up with the same amount of sleep as you would on a typical 16/8 24-hour cycle. I also shifted the days around slightly so that I would wake on Tuesdays at 00:20 (you can calculate the rest from there). The advantage is that it gave me some time on Monday mornings during business hours, at the cost of some loss of time on Friday afternoons in business hours.

The bonus for me, theoretically, is that I am always exhausted when going to bed. Which is great when you have sleeping problems.

The biggest problem you’d encounter with such a schedule is the rest of the world. I get around this by having a bit of flexibility in the hours of my employment (but not everyone has this). If you’ve got flextime, you can basically go nuts. Then if you’re living with anyone else, their schedules are a problem.

You also lose a day. Some people go crazy when they’ve realised a day has “gone missing”.

My eating habits were also a problem. I noticed I was a lot hungrier on this cycle. Typically I can get away with three meals a day with ease (sometimes two, by having a bigger dinner), but on this, I found I needed to eat four to five meals a day. This is because of the bigger energy demands of staying awake for longer.

My bowels caused trouble as well — they went absolutely haywire. I think if I stuck with the schedule for longer and setup artificial lighting in my room, I could trick them into working properly again. This could be diet related as well, YMMV.

I wrote a clock to help me monitor how my sleeping is supposed to be, and calculate it into something “normalised”. I also published the sources to this on github. I’ve got an updated version with a HTML5 canvas diagram in the works, I just haven’t finished it properly.

It has been a while since I last blogged, so I’d better write a long update on what’s happening.

ratemyrackmountedserver.com expired while I was moving. I decided to leave it dead, as this site kinda bellyflopped anyway. So there’s lots of nice broken links out there to my site… I apologise in advance for all that. I was stuck on dialup for about three weeks
at my new house. It took a little longer to get DSL provisioned than I had planned. So it’s back to mic.kyed.com for a little while.

iPrimus is the shittyest ISP ever. I like how their prepaid access kits were easy to use, but due to them having nonstandard Windows servers running the dialins, I had to use Windows as a gateway for a while. So I ended up setting up a Windows 2003 box with ICS for a few weeks. That’s now been wiped, and was probably comprimised during that time. Good on them. Also due to having to put a Windows server in the way and iPrimus’ very strict 5 hour session limits, my website was down for a while.

I’m now back up again, as of about two weeks ago. I just haven’t been bothered to write anything Now I think I may finally be bothered to get a new domain for myself… maybe. Once I find some spare money.

On the Saturday after my birthday, I had a rather subdued 18th party, due to the fact half of us had the flu. Oh well, good to catch up with some people. Last Saturday I went to LPC with some friends. It was good, though much bigger and slightly more serious than I’m used to. I wasn’t too worried, and we (myself, sherman, Hotsuma, Eecore) managed to trick Thrashbarg into having Windows running on his computer. It was only Windows 95, but Thrashbarg’s earlier zealotry on IRC made it still rather good. He argues that it didn’t count because it wasn’t installed on his hard drive. Oh well

I’ve started TAFE again, and once again I go into the interesting mode where I blog not as often as I should, for various reasons, mainly coming down to my own laziness. I picked up a wireless access point on the weekend, and it’s already proved quite nice for being able to instantly setup a network link to my current, temporary place of residence. Being stuck on my laptop I’m not so hot on, though I think I finally have the wireless link setup in a way where I don’t have 70% packet loss.

Maybe I’ll actually get the rest of my “kit” together and not be stuck on my laptop anymore.

TAFE has been rather easy this week with my lecturer for both classes yesturday being off sick, and today the lesson not going in due to the lecturer not getting their laptop yet. Probably tomorrow will actually be the first real class for the semester. And it’s a Friday morning. I love Friday mornings like I enjoy being dragged along a main road at 100 km/h barefoot. Woohoo.

Yesturday we (myself, James, Laska and Michelle) saw a game between Adelaide Avalanche and Central Coast Rhinos.
Well, not so much a game, but a complete thrashing: 8 – 1. Though I did
come in expecting Adelaide to win
hands down, with Adelaide being at the top
of the ladder.

The first period nobody scored. In the second period the two teams played
more offensively and less defensively. In the third period, the Rhinos
played more defensively, and I thought they were more demoralized and
focused on damage control. The rhinos’ players were taken off a few times.

After the <s>game</s> bloodmatch, we headed to the city, did a bit of a
survey and got dinner at an expensive city café. After, there was some ice cream eaten, and we headed out to Marion. Met up with some of Laska’s friends and
played a couple of games at Marion.

Now, for some more coding fun. Trying to get mod_python session management to work…

James has hair on his feet.

We decided to have an in-night tonight instead of going out wardriving or adventuring or whatever. So, me (Laska), James and Mickey sat around watching various stuff. We were gonna go to the fire station and watch, but eh.. too much effort

new era in Access-hating. The ASS is a society dedicated to expressing one’s mental anguish over the use and creation of databases in Microsoft Access as well as the general misuse of the software by using it for big company databases and such where an SQL server setup
would work more effectively.

In order to rally numbers better, I’m splitting the ASS into chapters (or “cracks”). The first of which is ASSHOLE.
In other news, btmassgen is coming to a finalised state, which is my simplified yet still powerful UI to create .torrent files. I’m using a native BitTorrent .NET library to do it, with the whole thing written in Visual Basic .NET 2005. There’s still some issues with the BitTorrent library that are stalling a final release.

I thought I’d better also mention g0t.planet?, a random assortment of blogs I’m starting to syndicate from people I know at TAFE. This was formally known as “Planet Trough”, but that name sucked, so I thought I’d better <s>steal</s> borrow a Benji-ism.

Last weekend, I went to Lanetarium. It was a little quiet though still enjoyable. Did a little experimentation with BitTorrent in a LAN environment, and it will still warrent further
testing. The low turnout ment that there wasn’t enough popular files to really give the system a good test. The final hurdle to adoption is that creating
torrents is a long process. Azureus has a wizard for it, but it still takes a fair bit of effort per file that really needs to be reduced. Anyway, my future ideas:

Automatic mass torrent creation. Have a client side application that can go and “walk” through a directory and automatically create torrents based on that. Though the program would first check with the tracker wether or not the file exists, so as to avoid duplication.

Fix the tracker software so that it uses an SQLite backend, rather than a flatfile system.

Allow tracking of file requests, and be able to fulfill those requests. So say if you wanted to look for the Star Wars Episode 3 Trailer, you’d file a request. Someone with the trailer would then make a torrent for it and then satisfy the request.

Basic user tracking. Things like a file upload, request or comment on a file should be identifiable as to whom did it.

I also tested ddrgen, the version I’ve been toying around with in SVN. I’ve fixed Windows 2003 Server support
(as in, the detection of it), though I still have to have a look at Longhorn, making the whole system more portable (ie: remove the dependency on nmap and smbclient), and detecting more Quake 3-based games. Some of those changes will be coming in this week.

I have a nice Windows XP/amd64 trial to play with too now, and I should have a look at getting ddrgen working on Windows 2003 Server… because some people seem to like it as a server over Linux or
BSD boxes.

Finally, the coffee spilt on my laptop during the Lanetarium has completely killed the touchpad and the keyboard is damaged. Both will need replacement, and I’m getting quotes on this done this week. It will probably cost over 100$, so I’m not terribly happy about it. I’m not taking it to Lanetarium anymore, that’s for sure.
